Cornwall Day 2

Day 2 – Bristol to St Austell (ish)

It’s 7.30am and still no sign of breakfast, we both had patchy sleep, me because of my shoulder, Nisha because she had a strong coffee for dessert the night before…someone isn’t happy and it’s not me!!! 7.45am came and went, more traipsing front the front window to the rear window…’Jes, shall I call them, it’s gone way past 7.30 and breakfast hasn’t arrived…shall I call them?, but hold on, reception opens at 8am, ok, let me try’…throughout that conversation, I think I said ‘what time did you circle on the breakfast card’ and ‘yes’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣 So, at 7.50am Nisha called reception, someone answered and they admitted that they had made a mistake and our breakfast will be with us in 20 minutes. Now relieved, Nisha was smiling again…nothing comes between Nisha and food!!!!!!

Breakfast arrived, the waiter was very apologetic…blah blah blah…he placed the large tray on the table and made a quick exit…I think he’s heard about Nisha and food 😜😜🤣🤣

Everyone know what my breakfast consists of, for those who don’t, I have oj, coffee, fruit, fruit compote and of course porridge!!! Rating to follow shortly. Nisha had scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, toast and tea…yep, I love porridge, Nisha loves tea!!!

So, my oj wasn’t freshly squeezed, coffee was nice and strong, no compote but replaced with berries and there wasn’t much imagination on the fruit front!!! The porridge was plentiful but there was a watery taste to it…I would have to rate it a 6/10, that’s with berries and honey mixed in. In addition to my porridge rating, Nisha rated her morning cuppa a disappointing 2/10!!! I think it wasn’t strong enough!!!

After breakfast, we showered, it’s not easy having to shower with only one functioning arm, I’m just glad I can get the scar area wet. Suitcases all packed we gingerly made our way down to reception to check out. Nisha was up for a fight…she asked how much our final bill was, the receptionist told us and happy with the answer, Nisha smiled and backed off…see, this is what happens when you don’t enjoy your breakfast tea…I’ve made a mental note 😜. Car packed, off we go.

First dilemma of the day, Nisha wanted to go over the bridge, the car wanted food…car won 🤣🤣🤣🤣. However, on our way to the M5, we saw and went over another long bridge…I’ve never seen anyone quite so excited about bridges…Vijay…I’m looking at your influence here!!!! Now on the M5 and the car is flying again…middle lane, overtaking lane, we even venture to the left lane!!! Yes, I’m surprised because on the way here, Nisha was one of those drivers who would stay on the overtaking lane until someone was behind her…my guidance has helped 🙏🏽. Sadly, because of the lack of sleep and pain, I haven’t been the loudest of passengers, I did fall asleep but that I was much needed. Nisha on the other hand just needs a few sips of water and Prince on the radio, luckily she doesn’t sing along 😜🤣😜🤣. There were signs for Cheddar Gorge, I haven’t been but Nisha had and so she took the turning, i reprogrammed the sat nav…40 minutes to get there…we had a meeting…did we really want to go? Was it worth it? Will I enjoy it? It’s going to add time to our journey. Decision made…. We turned around and headed for the M5 and back on our way…!! The roads were still over run with water, I think we were lucky because the rains must have just missed Cheddar Gorge otherwise we would have been affected by floods.

As we entered Devon, my eyes closed…as we entered Cornwall my eyes opened. Yep, the car flies 🤣🤣🤣. The rain had been replaced by sun, and our destination was 30 minutes away but we were going to be early. We entered the boardroom and had a meeting…board member Nisha remembered there’s a beach nearby, board member Jes said let’s go..!!! I googled the name and set the sat nav to Porthpean beach. As we came off the A road, we took a left onto a single track, very narrow road…and I mean very narrow, and windy. We parked up, and made our way to the beach, the sea was very calm, Nisha raring to get into the water…I told her to get into her wetsuit and go for a swim…her response….’it looks cold’!!!!

Porthpean beach…
I really really really want to go for a swim!!!!

There isn’t much else to do there, the cafe was closed, the only thing open are the toilets!!! Back to the car and off we set to Megavissey, it was recommended by Nisha’s former colleague. Nisha expertly manoeuvred the car up the single windy road, a tad slow but always good to be careful and eventually we got to a more roomy B road. The journey is short and as we enter the village, we’re met by a large car park…I’m sure there’s more parking near the harbour but we both need a walk so we pull in, parked up and set off for the harbour. During this short walk, everyone we passed was well over retirement age!!! The shops also catered for that crowd!!! Finding a nice restaurant was now our priority, we checked a couple of menus but nothing stood out until we read the menu at The Wheel House…table for two please…yes my lovey, I’ll be back with the menus…yep, everyone’s a lovey 🤣🤣🤣. What to choose??? Fish dishes galore and all freshly caught and delivered that morning!!!

Restaurant with a view!!
Yum yum!!!

In the photo you will see, from left to right, fries, whitebait, pilchards, cheesy fries and scallops. On our plates we have fresh battered cod. Every mouthful was tasty and so fresh!!!

Our tanks full, we slowly made our way to the car park, on the way we popped into a local craft fair held at the local village hall…as soon as we entered, the usual village hall smell hit us…the fragrance of old soap and talc mixed in with some body odour…we weren’t there for long!!!!

Now in the car, the sat nav set for Asda because we’re staying in a self catering luxury house…our shop took us 20 minutes and we made our way to Trewiddle Villages, Luxury holiday homes. We’ve been upgraded because the home we booked has power issues and so the only home vacant is a four bedroom mansion with outdoor decking and balcony.

Everything from the car was now in the home and we could now relax!!! Refreshments were needed, I had a coffee and banana, Nisha on the other hand had a cup of tea, the stick your pinky up in the air as you drink kind and a scone…always jam first!!! Yes, she’s done loads of research on the matter!!!

Toasted or not???

We were home for the night, while Nisha pottered around, I had to exercise my shoulder, not a nice thing to do!!!

Don’t even ask me which movie we watched, but it was rubbish!!!, sleep was now needed…good night everyone!!!
